Ireland Goes Post-Apocalyptic in ‘One Hundred Mornings’

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under New Movie News

When you think of Ireland, your mind generally tends to conjure images of untainted green landscapes, rainy afternoons and pallid, red-headed stereotypes. Conor Horgan, Katie Holly and the cast of One Hundred Mornings, however, think the Emerald Isle could do with a bit of a post-apocalyptic makeover. The crew are bringing their Workbook Discovery and Distribution Award winning movie to Los Angeles for a week of screenings at the Downtown Independent Theatre.

Check out the trailer below:

The film definitely looks promising; a restrained, character-driven piece more similar in tone to Cormac McCarthy’s The Road than the zombie-infested/Mad Max scenarios we are so accustomed to.

The Workbook Discovery and Distribution Award is a US “social open source” initiative that’s been set up to help those in the creative industries not only fund, promote and distribute their project but make a enough profit from it to sustain subsequent endeavours. The Workbook Project was founded by independent filmmaker Lance Weiler, best known for the effective yet ultra-low budget cult horror The Last Broadcast.

So, Doomsday showed us Scotland after the fall of civilisation… now all that’s left to make my desolate life feel complete is a post-apocalypse movie set in Wales. Think of the possibilities…

Visit www.onehundredmornings.com for more on the film, or read the press release below for dates and times:

Competition: 5 Digital Copies of ‘Coffee’ Up For Grabs

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under Comic News

Shelfabuse.com has five eBook copies of Mark Fisman’s Coffee to give a way. It’s a surreal but hyper-stylish graphic novel that will appeal to fans of such writers as William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson and Jeff Noon. A preview containing the first two chapters of Coffee can be read at http://marcfiszman.com.

From my Coffee review:

“Coffee takes us through a bizarre world of insane marketing, mind-expanding drugs, sexual cravings, sausage cars, geometric abstraction, hyperdimensional slavery… and, of course, coffee. On occasion, also fish. Just when it’s beginning to make some semblance of sense, Fiszman adds or removes another layer of reality from Coffee, and you’re left stranded once more, ever bewildered but never bored.”

For the opportunity to read the entire digital book (PDF) for free, simply email here with ‘Coffee Comp’ in the subject. In exactly a month’s time, five confused souls will each receive a download link to the eBook.

Coffee by Marc Fiszman

Coffee will be available from 20th August as a 385pp. print-on-demand paperback (£9.99) and DRM-free PDF eBook (£3.99), both available through Marc Fiszman’s site at marcfiszman.com.

Vote for Lincoln Butterfield, Win an RIP M.D. Graphic Novel

Thursday, August 12th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under Comic News

Now, here’s an odd little competition. Lincoln Butterfield Animation are currently giving away a copy of their latest all-ages book RIP M.D., as well as offering a personalised caricature as part of the ‘Will the real Lincoln Butterfield please stand up?’ promotion.

Several artists have each illustrated their idea of exactly what a personified Lincoln Butterfield (the name of the publisher) might look like, and want you to vote for the character/portrait that will ultimately represent the company. One lucky voter wins the book and the opportunity to see their own ugly mug immortalised by the winning artist.

To enter, simply visit http://www.facebook.com/lincolnbutterfield and vote in the comments section. Alternatively, if you’re not the fortuitous type, the book can be ordered from Fantagraphics.

‘Will the real Lincoln Butterfield please stand up?’

‘Will the real Lincoln Butterfield please stand up?’

From the press release:

‘Will the real Lincoln Butterfield please stand up?’

Want to win your own copy of RIP M.D. PLUS a personal caricature drawn by one of Lincoln Butterfield’s finest???

HOW THIS MADNESS WORKS…

PART ONE: VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE LINCOLN BUTTERFIELD PICTURE

The artists over at Lincoln Butterfield Animation have all looked deep into their unconscious minds and have each drawn their own repressed image of what they believe Lincoln Butterfield would look like if he/she/it actually existed.

These characters are being posted on their Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/lincolnbutterfield) Monday 16th for your scrutiny and judgment; all you have to do for the chance to win a free copy of their Graphic Novel RIP M.D. is vote for your favorite Butterfield. Leave a comment underneath the picture of your choice and your name will be placed into a Top Hat (more on that below).  The character with the most votes wins.  Easy.

PART TWO: THEY PICK A WINNER FROM EVERYONE WHO VOTED

When the election is over, every voter’s name will be placed into a Victorian top hat and one name will be pulled from it.  This person will win an advanced copy of the graphic novel AND the option to submit their mug shot, which will be transformed into a personal caricature by the artist of the winning Butterfield. Lovely.

A little more about RIP M.D.,

RIP M.D. was written and illustrated by Mitch Schauer, an Emmy® Award winning producer, writer and designer. Comic book veteran Mike Vosburg has brought his innovative, illustrative style to the artwork’s inking, and Michael Lessa and Justin Yamaguchi have created a whole new look for RIP M.D. with their cinematic color and special effects expertise.

Secret Cinema Announces “Most Ambitious Event to Date”

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under New Movie News

Wow. Secret Cinema continues to grow, in the face of fears that cinema attendance will eventually succumb to cheaper DVDs and internet piracy. It’s a phenomenon that seems to have spread from word of mouth and movie mag mentions to national media attention in just over a year.

I for one am not surprised. Not only does Secret Cinema’s “live cinema” have the potential to make moviegoing an event once more, but the evenings are clearly aimed at those with a genuine love for the movies – as opposed to those stumped for something better to do on a Sunday night. Furthermore, it’s always great to see such classics as Blade Runner, Ghostbusters and The Warriors as God intended.

So what is this most ambitious event, then? An entire weekend, from the 3rd to the 5th of September. And the films they’ll be showing are as always anyone’s guess; previous movies have included Aliens, Anvil! The Story of Anvil and the gruesome pie-in-face-fest that is Bugsy Malone.

The last show saw Canary Wharf transformed into a cyberpunk dystopia for a showing of Blade Runner to an audience of 7,000. Check the video below:

Tickets are available at www.secretcinema.org priced at £27.50 (£23.50 for students). But be warned: these shows sell out quickly.

_

From the press release:

SECRET CINEMA, THE PIONEER OF LIVE CINEMA, ANNOUNCE THEIR MOST AMBITIOUS EVENT TO DATE. BE PART OF THE REVOLUTION.

3-5 SEPTEMBER 2010

In Partnership with Windows® Phone

Secret Cinema is looking for the adventurous, the valiant, the stalwart and the brave to venture with them on their most incredible journey yet.

Taking place from 3rd to 5th September, in partnership with Windows® Phone, Secret Cinema continues its revolution in creating an alternative to the traditional cinema-going experience with its biggest show to date.

With audience figures rising and tickets selling out in record time due to popular demand be sure to get yours here: www.secretcinema.org.

Since its conception in December 2007 when 400 people came together under London Bridge for Gus Van Saint’s Paranoid Park, Secret Cinema has continued to push the boundaries of how audiences experience film. In June 2010, 7000 people descended upon Canary Wharf for SC’s 11th outing to discover the world of Los Angeles 2019 and to enjoy an immersive experience of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner. A vast abandoned warehouse was transformed into the brave new world with littered alleyways, live bands, DJs and over 100 actors, climaxing in a live aerial recreation of the film’s famous final scene.

‘Secret Cinema is looking to grow the experience and community with every event. Our huge growth in numbers is a protest from our audience to bring the magic back to cinema. Our partnership with Windows Phone has blossomed over the past few events and we are very happy to be continuing to work together.’

Founder and creative director, Fabien Riggall

Secret Cinema is revolutionising the traditional cinematic experience, the secret venue will be revealed a few days before the event. The film is revealed upon arrival. Secret Cinema screen all genres and eras, cult classics, golden oldies and exclusive preview screenings of eagerly anticipated upcoming releases. Surprising site-specific locations from five-star hotel car parks to working city farms are commandeered to evoke the spirit of the secret movie.

Audiences interact with the experience by joining up to Secret Cinema’s Facebook and Twitter, where the first seeds of the film’s identity begin to be sown in the weeks ahead of the events. Join the nearly 50,000 friends of Secret Cinema on Facebook

www.facebook.com/pages/Secret-Cinema/46896241052 or on Twitter @secretcinema.

September’s Secret Cinema marks a renewed partnership with Windows Phone, who over the next year will bring even more connectivity and interactivity to the Secret experience.

“We’re thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Secret Cinema,” said Alex Reeve, Director, Mobile Business Group, Microsoft UK. “Windows Phone aims to help amplify the cinematic experience that Secret Cinema brings to its fan base, who are connecting and sharing their experiences every day via the web and mobile.”

Recent Secret Cinema events in partnership with Windows Phone have included a mind blowing new world of visual delights in an epic recreation of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and an amazing re-creation of post-war and modern Berlin, for Wings Of Desire in February earlier this year.

Do you want to be part of the uprising? Let us be great again…

Largo Winch: Deadly Revenge DVD Released 23rd August

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under Comic Movie News

Optimum Home Entertainment has announced that the 2008 French action flick Largo Winch: Deadly Revenge will be released in the UK on DVD on the 23rd August. This is just one of several adaptations of Philippe Francq and Jean Van Hamme’s popular and enduring Belgium comic character of the same name, who also saw a TV series in 2001 and the videogame Largo Winch: Empire Under Threat released in 2002.

Watch the Largo Winch Deadly Revenge TV spot

As the title Deadly Revenge (and indeed the comic from which it’s derived) suggests, the movie looks to be a slice of cheesy, action-packed fun. Directed by Jérôme Salle (Anthony Zimmer) it stars Tomer Sisley as the eponymous rogue, Kristen Scott Thomas, whose presence in anything is always welcome, and Benedict Wong (Sunshine and the severely underrated 15 Stories High).

Largo Winch: Deadly Revenge

Largo Winch: Deadly Revenge

Plot synopsis:

When billionaire Nerio Winch, founder of the powerful W Group is found dead, with no traceable family, it is uncertain as to who is to inherit his financial empire. But Nerio had a secret he kept well hidden: a son, Largo (Sisley) adopted from a Bosnian orphanage thirty years before. As this previously well kept secret comes to light it is discovered that the young heir has suddenly been thrown into prison deep in the Amazon for drug trafficking. Adventurer, assassin, killer, maverick and international playboy, Largo Winch is the last of a dying breed. Now head of a global corporation he must fight for what’s rightfully his and avenge his father’s death.

Cognito Comic’s Operation Ajax Debuts on iPad Active Reader

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under Comic News

While digitally distributed comics are nothing new, it arguably took the unveiling of the iPad to not only get the medium some much needed mainstream attention, but to give us geeks something to read said digital comics with on the go. All, while flaunting that super slick, super shiny screen, naturally.

Emerging publisher Cognito Comics has debuted its first graphic novel Operation Ajax, billed as an “original story based on history.” The GN is a fact-based account of the CIA’s involvement in the Middle East and the roots of the modern American conflict with Iran, inspired by best-selling investigative journalism Stephen Kinzer’s All the Shah’s Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror. This nonfiction narrative has been developed for the iPad from the ground up by game developer Tall Chair.

Operation Ajax will be released later this fall, and those wanting to be notified when the book becomes available, can get tweeted at: www.twitter.com/cognitocomics. For those who haven’t been able to scrape together enough pennies from behind the sofa to afford Apple’s latest must have accessory, Cognito Comics has a pretty wicked flash simulator here.

Operation Ajax - Cognito Comics

Operation Ajax - Cognito Comics

From the press release:

Original story based on history:
Operation Ajax is inspired by the investigative journalism of best-selling author, Stephen Kinzer and his work All the Shah’s Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror. Kinzer has partnered with Cognito Comics as its advisor and is actively involved in editing the historic CIA thriller.

Operation Ajax tells the true story of the CIA’s involvement in the Middle East and the roots of the modern American conflict with Iran.

“There is an obvious gap emerging in the world of digital comics between the static and the interactive panel,” said Cognito Comics founder and CEO, Daniel Burwen. “We looked at new ways to bridge that gap by engaging people in narrative nonfiction with intricate art and layers of information. We let the audience choose what they want to access, at their own pace, without interrupting the flow of a story. And, that is fundamental to an immersive graphic novel experience.”

First Interactive Reader Application for iPad:
Developed by Tall Chair, Inc., the Tall Chair Active Reader is a powerful iPad application that takes the audience beyond a traditional panel-by-panel reading style.

“Technology makes it possible to re-imagine how much detail we can include in a graphic novel,” said Dan Brazelton, CEO, Tall Chair, Inc. “The Tall Chair Active Reader for the iPad opens up new and extremely creative ways for authors, artists and publishers to tell a well rounded story. They can create books that hold layers of interesting articles, photographs or writings which expand the story they are delivering.”

The Active Reader makes it possible for an infinite layer of research-rich facts, interesting journalism and photos to be embedded within a historical narrative. Factual information and original documents discovered while the audience follows the plot can be easily accessed and effortlessly viewed without having to leave the pages of the book.

“We are able to throw away the limitations of a static page and guide people to secret passageways they can go to throughout the historical thriller,” added Tall Chair’s Dan Brazelton.

For example, in a recent blog post from comic book maven Scott McCloud titled About “About ‘About Digital Comics,’” he notes: “Long form comics are different from strips. If a cartoonist wants their readers to stick with a 60-page story about their Moroccan grandmother’s struggle with Diabetes, they need that reader to lose themselves in the story. That means keeping readers’ eyes on the page. Every time a reader looks away to navigate, they’re leaving the world of the story, and returning to the world of scrollbars and links.”

Operation Ajax:
Based on Stephen Kinzer’s investigative research, the narrative nonfiction in Operation Ajax examines the facts behind today’s political conflicts in the Middle East. A nameless protagonist — an amalgamation of government agents whose names were redacted from declassified CIA records — is the central character. He recalls the dramatic historical events he was involved in with heads of state, covert agents, and underground political activists. This is the first of what will be a series that follows the Protagonist as he looks back upon a lifetime of experiences of working in South America, Africa, Great Britain and the Middle East, and the memories that haunt him in his retirement.

‘Isness’ Fotonovel Project Seeks Donors

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under Comic News

A bunch of Brooklyn creatives led by multimedia artist Stavit Allweis need your donations to help fund Isness, a gruesome fotonovela chronicling the last 24 hours in the lives of the sole surviving family of a post-apocalyptic future.

Isness: A Cinematic Graphic Novel

Isness: A Cinematic Graphic Novel

For those unaware of what exactly a fotonovela is, the format was essentially a comic book with photos instead of illustrations. Though the technique pretty much died out in the 70s, it’s still used to “humorous” effect in such classy publications as the The Sun. But while the fotonovelas of yore were pulpy, trashy affairs (or inexpensive movie adaptations) Isness looks to be comprised from painstakingly highly polished shots that look like stills from a movie, albeit an eerie, gore-drenched B-movie.

There’s clearly a lot of hard work and attention to detail going into this project, and Stavit already has a whopping 40,000 images to work from. The costumes look superb, and should the team get the donations they require the house exterior and surroundings will be built as miniatures and added to the photography via green screen. If there’s one thing I love more than anything, its detailed dioramas of dilapidated dystopias – and alliterations, naturally.

For information on the comic, as well as a ton of photos, visit countercomics.com. As with an ever-increasing number of indie projects, the guys behind Isness are seeking financial support for the project up at the brilliant kickstarter.com. Those who pledge a few dollars will receive anything from custom prints to signed copies of the book and, most intriguingly, a “one-of-a-kind, recycled and re-designed T-shirt featuring an ISNESS image of your choice!”

‘American Terrorist’ Needs Your Support

Friday, June 25th, 2010 by Carl Doherty under Comic News

I was away when I received this info, so this is probably coming at the 11th hour. And yes, that headline was intended to aggravate.

Essentially, Tyler & Wendy Chin-Tanner of publishing company A Wave Blue World are looking for comic fans to help fund a print run of their comic project American Terrorist via kickstarter.com.

Kickstarter seems to be an increasingly popular way of gaining both interest and funding for indie projects, and in this particular instance donating a few dollars will get you anything from a digital copy of the book all the way up to original hand-drawn sketches by Tyler Chin-Tanner and Andy MacDonald (Punisher, Terminator, NYC Mech).

Check out the project here.

American Terrorist

American Terrorist

From the press release:

(June 22, 2010- New York City, NY ) With five days in their kickstarter campaign left, Wendy and Tyler Chin-Tanner, creators of American Terrorist, pushed through a final digital issue of the title to help accomplish their goal to get the book to press. For a promise bid of $8, you get access to a behind the scenes blog as well as all four digital issues of the books now and four more later! Wave Blue World plans to release the next four issues digitally monthly if the campaign is a success! A kickstarter “promise” charge is only processed if the project meets its goal.

There are numerous other options on how to support the book, but only for the next 5 days. You can see more options at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/tylerchintanner/american-terrorist-the-graphic-novel. Support promises have doubled in the last month, but more are needed!

“The success of our kickstarter project is a litmus test not a decisive action,” explained Tyler Chin-Tanner, CEO of A Wave Blue World.  “We are trying to decide where our company should go and we hope to have a better gage of the future of comics.  Is print still a viable option for new companies? The success or failure of the kickstarter campaign will simply influence our decision and not make it for us.”

For further Information, as well as more on A Wave Blue World’s first title, Adrenaline, visit www.awaveblueworld.com.
